What role do record labels play in today’s music industry? Many expected the death of the big, bad middle man of music. While massive change has come to this industry (probably more than most) there is an important role for the labels.

I chat to Andrew Mitchley, head of A&R for Gresham Records about their role and the state of the industry.

Thanks Ryan, i believe in this modern age where the media and online platform has grown exponentially, living and growing with the media and digital age is key to every business.
A thumbs up to Andrew Mitchley to align himself and his industry in that way and i wish his effort to take music to various schools will be achieved as many talents are hardly realized without pioneers like Andrew Mitchley.
Well done to you Ryan for remaining an outstanding influential mogul in media and digital space

“If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music.”
    ― Albert Einstein

Excellent interview. As a technologist and semi pro musician for most of my life, the importance of music in my own character development has been fundamental. I was the shy kid at school and when I started my first band spent, the first few months vomiting before performing out of nerves. Overcoming this fear is what allows me to do my current work. I often speak in front of large audiences and love the opportunity. I have done well over 1000 live shows and I still get a little nervous but it is such an exciting experience performing that I jump on stage as often as I can.

What a difference it would have made if I could have started studying music in my early teens. I might have done better at school and perhaps had a more academic career. I believe that schools primary purpose is to prepare youngsters for society and being confident is a critical skill that so many take for granted.

I enjoyed the example of the music industry as an example of how business had to change to survive. So often we use Uber as that example and the music industry embarrassingly slipped my mind as a far more radical example of business change through technology.

I was pleased to hear the incredible changes in the music industry from Andrew. Ryan your questions and comments were excellent too. There’s a lot we can do without but music and movies are not on the list. keep up the great work.
